Tensor Tips: Using the Right Nozzle for the Right Adhesive

Whether you’re using our 22L spray canisters or our 500ml aerosols, one thing is true about TensorGrip Joinery Adhesive: they’re designed to perform like no other solutions on the market. However, whilst our spray adhesives are engineered to achieve top class results, those results can vary depending on choices made by the user. In the latest blog from Tensor Tips, we explore how your choice of nozzle can be a results game-changer.

Innovation is at the heart of what we do, and you can see that innovation in action with our smart canister spray system. Containing everything you need to achieve smooth, equally-spread and visually satisfying results, your kit will contain a spray gun, a gun tip and a 4 metre hose (to order your free Quin Global Kick-Off Kit, click here). At the tip of the gun you can find the nozzle, which is used to disperse glue over your substrate.

Before you get started with your TensorGrip Joinery Adhesives, it helps to familiarise yourself with the range of available nozzles and how they can offer unique benefits depending on the material you’re working with. Keep reading the latest from Tensor Tips to learn more about these attachments and why they make a difference!

Got Work to Do? It’s Time to Know Your Nozzle

We get it: you have a tight project deadline and need to get spraying - fast. However, taking a moment to identify the perfect nozzle will ensure you hit the ground running with the kind of results you’ll want to see. So, take it from us: set aside those few minutes and you can save time that could otherwise be spent on unwanted remedial work!

So, let’s get started by looking at our range of nozzles, with five to choose from in total. Each nozzle is used for a different joinery task and will offer a specific viscosity or spray angle. This makes your choice of nozzle critically important. The five different nozzles are:

  • The 4001 Nozzle
  • The 6501 Nozzle
  • The 9501 Nozzle
  • The 8002 Nozzle
  • The Lechler Nozzle

For many people, these will simply look like a bunch of random numbers. However, these numbers matter

  • The First 2 Numbers: The number at the beginning of your nozzle code (40, 65, 95 and 80) all refer to the angle your adhesive will be sprayed at.
  • The Following Numbers: The numbers which follow the first 2 digits refer to the size of the actual nozzle. The Lechler Nozzle, for instance, sits between 6401 and 9501 in both size and spray pattern. Meanwhile, the 8002 Nozzle is our top recommendation for the spraying of thicker adhesives - especially PU adhesives.

Knowing Your Nozzle: What Difference Does it Make?

Our range of spray adhesive nozzles have been specifically engineered to perform across a variety of substrates and joinery tasks, and your choice of nozzle certainly does matter.

Firstly - if you’re currently using one adhesive and need to change to another, don’t just assume that you won’t need to change nozzles. Always check you have the correct nozzle to get the most out of your TensorGrip adhesive.

Secondly - it’s important to remember that you’ll need a different nozzle if you’re swapping from a web spray to a mist spray. If you’re wondering why this is, it’s quite simple: mist spray adhesives are much lower viscosity and the 4001 mist spray nozzle has a smaller orifice to facilitate and produce the fine mist droplet pattern. The mist spray nozzle also has an insert which goes into the back of the nozzle which stops it from dripping when the trigger is released (which, if you’re working with high gloss finishes, may cause aesthetic issues).

What Can Go Wrong?

Whilst using the incorrect nozzle can cause some aesthetic issues, it can also cause problems which may require unwanted remedial work. Here’s some of the more significant issues that can be caused by using the incorrect nozzle:

  • Incorrect Spray: Using the incorrect nozzle can lead to an incorrect spray - it’s that simple. If you’ve chosen the wrong nozzle, you can often tell by its sputtering and unevenness.
  • Dripping: Choosing the wrong nozzle can lead to adhesive dripping. This can cause issues, especially when you need a high-gloss finish.
  • Telegraphing: Also known as ‘rippling’, using an incorrect nozzle can lead to that unwanted effect that tends to look a bit like an orange peel!
