Ever wondered what Koningsdag or King’s Day in the Netherlands is? With our colleagues in the Netherlands being so enthusiastic about the day we felt we had to join in the celebration with them. It may well be the best party in Holland. In the streets, canals, parks and everywhere in between, the city is bursting with orange! They celebrate King Willem Alexander’s birthday with music, street parties, flea markets, and fun fairs. The king himself travels through the country with his family. On King’s Night the night before Kings Day it is celebrated with music shows and parties all over the country. DJs play parties on public squares; brightly decorated boats fill canals and live music spills onto the streets from café patios. In today’s blog we are going to talk through what King’s Day is what it really means to our colleagues in the Netherlands and join us in celebrating with BulletBond®, which also just happens to be orange.

The Biggest Flea Market in the World!

On King’s Day gives everyone gets the chance to sell their second-hand good on the streets which creates one of the largest flea markets in the world! Due to this you can find people lining the streets and parks selling off all kinds of different things from old records to shoes and showing off their artistic skills. One of the main attractions is Vondelpark which is reserved for children who gather in great numbers to sell all their old toys and games. The most entertaining part to the park is the many performing children doing things like playing the violin, applying theatre makeup and playing games, the list is endless. Our Dutch Office Closure times

As King’s Day is celebrated all over the Netherlands and all Dutch cities will be awash with orange and all-day festivals our Dutch office will be closed on Friday 27th April and will re-open on Monday 30th April.

Bart Van Oosten one of our Business Development Managers in our Dutch office talked us through what King’s Day meant to him. “King’s Day is a fun day for all of us in The Netherlands as it’s all about friendships and community. It’s a great opportunity to spend time with family and friends and soak up the festival atmosphere. With my 2 children we spend time taking part in the many activities on hand and obviously indulging in the local tompouce, a sweet pastry loaded with cream that literally goes everywhere!  For me that’s really what King’s Day is all about. It’s about a sense of belonging. For one day, everybody is the same in Holland. Bright orange and crazy.”

Talking about orange, those taking part in Koningsdag commonly dye their hair orange or wear orange clothing in honour of the House of Orange-Nassau, which rules over the Netherlands. This colour choice is sometimes dubbed orange madness, or in Dutch, oranjegekte.
