Winter Canister Care

With winter on its way, we all need to pull our winter clothes out of the cupboards, make sure our cars have their winter tyres on, shut the curtains and hibernate until the sun returns.  OK so we may not get to hibernate, were not hedgehogs after all, but getting ready for winter is something we all have to consider. Your canisters should also be included on your list of things to prepare for winter.

Low temperatures can have adverse effects on certain adhesives, such as thickening or changes in appearance. We strongly recommend taking the time to properly store your product when it is not in use, especially overnight.  Have a look at our video below for more information or follow our guidelines below.

With cold temperatures now upon us, this can affect the physical properties of adhesives. If you notice any of the signs below, your adhesive might be underperforming due to the weather:

  • Inconsistent spray pattern
  • Adhesive is spitting
  • Flash off times increase
  • Materials coming out of solution
  • Foaming in the adhesive

If you notice any of these signs, you need to reconsider how to store your adhesives throughout the winter.  It’s super easy, follow our top tips and keep your canisters in working condition, whatever the weather!

Temperature

Spray adhesives work best at room temperature, so where possible don’t store in temperatures lower than 10°C.

Storage

Where possible, keep the canisters off cold, concrete floors.  Instead, store them on top of a pallet, on top of a piece of foam or in an MDF box with caster wheels.  Try not to leave outdoors overnight, move the canister indoors, so they are ready to use first thing in the morning.

Ensuring that the adhesive container is stored in a warm environment is crucial, and it is extremely important that canisters and aerosols remain off of concrete floors.

Warming up a cold canister

If you have no choice but to store in colder conditions and experience any of the above reaction, our experts recommend taking these steps:

Large [22L] or smaller canisters:

Immerse the canister in a bucket of warm water for about 15 minutes.  Remove and gently agitate to bring the glue back into solution. Then you can warm up the canister before use by placing it in a bucket of warm water for 15 minutes, and then rock back and forth on the base shoulder of the canister and gently agitate the canister.

Intermediate [108L] or larger canisters:

Remove canisters from unheated concrete floors into an area where the air temperature is above 60°F (15°C) until they are at or above 60°F (15°C).  To agitate the canister, lay it on its side and roll back and forth gently.

Prevent it!

Use a heated canister blanket to keep the container at a safe and reasonable temperature.  Store your canisters off concrete floors on a pallet racking or cart.
