TensorGrip Joinery Adhesives: Towards a Circular Economy

Joiners work in a world that is rapidly changing in the face of climate crisis, with 2021’s IPCC Report calling on industry to do more to protect humanity’s future. As joinery and construction strive to become more sustainable, TensorGrip Joinery is committed to driving positive change for people and planet. In our latest industry insight, we examine how our adhesives can fit into a circular economy.

Calls for immediate and swift action to keep the planet within the habitable 1.5C temperature range are growing by the day. Reversing the worst excesses of climate change requires a real commitment from all sections of industry to drastically reduce carbon emissions. Whilst moving away from fossil fuels is critical, broader measures such as embracing the circular economy can play a significant role.

Moving Towards a Cleaner Joinery Sector

So - what do we mean by embracing the circular economy? Put simply, this refers to ‘closing the loop’ of product life cycles to bring real benefit to the environment, the economy and society. This means creating a truly circular life cycle with recycling and reuse at its heart. This is compared to the historical life cycle where products are traditionally built, used and then discarded as waste.

TensorGrip Joinery joins FEICA (The Association of the European Adhesive and Sealant Industry) in supporting the European Commission’s calls for responsible & efficient use of the planet’s resources. Whilst the adhesive industry has much work to do towards becoming truly sustainable, we’ve identified a number of ways how our products can facilitate a cleaner Joinery Sector

TensorGrip Joinery Adhesives and the Circular Economy

Heavy industry is recognised as one of the primary culprits for carbon emissions and the production of greenhouse gases. Here at TensorGrip, we’re pioneering research and innovation to lessen the impact. Here’s just a few ways how our products can contribute towards a circular, sustainable economy:

  • Reduced energy consumption: Heavy industry is widely recognised as a key emitter of carbon and greenhouse gases - especially where manufacturing, construction and automotive industries are concerned. TensorGrip Adhesives allow for more sustainable processes by eliminating energy consumption in the installation of mechanical fixings, for example. In a broader sense, the application of our joinery adhesives requires no energy consumption, with our solutions applied using a unique propellant system.

  • Adhesive efficiency: TensorGrip Adhesives can contribute positively to materials processes, optimising the use of materials across all stages of the production stage. A greater efficiency in our adhesives supports the use of renewable materials such as wood in construction.

  • Product reparability: Joinery adhesives enable the effective repair of many products, especially those constructed from wood. Whilst this fact is easily overlooked, repairability forms a major aspect of the circular economy.

  • Durability: Our adhesives provide the strength required to truly extend the lifespan of products and components and their service life.

  • Recycling compatibility: Because TensorGrip adhesives are applied via innovative, thin spray patterns and beads, the focus here must be on the recycling and circularity of the products they’re used to bond. A range of our adhesives don’t present an obstacle to the recycling process, meaning less material needs to be processed at the end of a product's life.

Whilst our adhesives can help move joinery towards a sustainable and circular economy, we’re also making strides to reduce the environmental impact of our products - whether that’s through our reduced use of CFCs, VOCs and our use of recyclable, refillable canisters. The future of adhesives is now!
