A day in the life of Research and Development - part 2

I am Eric and my role here at Quin Global UK is the Research and Development (R&D) Manager. I have been at Quin now for 8 years and over this time my role has changed and evolved into my role as it is today.  As any researcher, will tell you research can be frustrating at times, especially when the answer seems to be out of your reach, but it’s those eureka moments that make it more worthwhile.

For me research and development is of the uttermost importance because we are continually trying to develop the best solutions for our customers as that is what is important to them.  We want to be moving ahead and most often this achieved by using cutting edge technology that’s easier to use and more effective than before.

At Quin we are looking not only to provide superior bonds but to also improve processes so that they are faster, cleaner and more efficient. This includes making sure that all our products are safe for the user and the environment.

So how do we achieve this? Well at Quin development always starts with a need from the customer whether it be a need for better bond performance on certain materials in certain conditions or that there is a need for further development on our products to meet a particular safety requirement for one of our customers.

At Quin the process always starts with the products that are in our current range, and I look at which product(s) work best for the particular requirement. I then would look at what are the strengths and weaknesses of the product, in this application. Once I have established these points I then find out what needs to change or improved and what it can be changed too. Finally, I look at the factors around the compound(s) that can be changed and how they can enhance or improve the product performance.

After I have considered all these options I then start that looking at all the latest technology of raw materials and create several possible options. Looking at these options we consider the environmental factors, availability, performance and much more, creating a score for each product. Then we start developing, trialling and testing the new products looking at the best scoring products first. We just keep testing until we find a product which passes the necessary criteria, set out by our customer(s).

As you can see at Quin we are always continually testing our products so that we are producing the best products which are first class performers. With cutting edge technology and safety at the forefront of everything we do our products are continually evolving and like all good researchers we continually strive for perfection.

We use this process to create the great range of adhesive Quin now supplies to so many industries across the manufacturing industry.  What makes my job so enjoyable is creating solutions to make the lives of so many people easier.
